First introduced in Battlefield 4 (2013) as a contextual system, it remained a staple in the series. Battlefield 5 even upgraded to a manual leaning mechanic. However, the removal of leaning in Battlefield 2042 marked the end of an eight-year streak, leaving many players frustrated.

Henderson shared this speculation on Bluesky, igniting discussions across social media platforms. While many fans celebrated the possibility of its comeback, others voiced concerns about deeper issues within the franchise. On Reddit, one user pointed out that the absence of leaning was among their biggest complaints about Battlefield 2042. Meanwhile, others argued that fixing more significant gameplay and design flaws should take priority.
Without leaning, Battlefield 2042 forced players to expose themselves fully during firefights, which many felt reduced the tactical depth of combat. The rumored reintroduction of leaning could address this and align with the realistic gunplay expected in modern shooter games.
The Battlefield 2042 chapter officially concluded in March with the final seasonal update, “Turning Point,” which added new maps and weapons.
